At the end of the book of Job, we see Job have restored to him double of all he lost. This may be the most difficult part of the story for us to relate to. Yet, because of Jesus’ resurrection victory, we can and do find a future day to hope in and for that we may not initially expect.

The question so many people ask in the midst of suffering is “why” and rightly so! We believe if there was a reason and an explanation we could better handle the difficulty we face. Yet, we find in the story of Job, someone who directly is responded to when they lay the question of “why” before the feet of the Father. The answer might not be what we want to hear, but we can also relate to the response of Job.

In this week’s sermon, we take time to reflect on the unpredictable oscillation between peace and chaos in life, noting how fleeting moments of clarity and purpose, such as mission trips or significant life events, can be contrasted with times of overwhelming stress and uncertainty. In the Gospel, Jesus reshapes the disciples' understanding of greatness by teaching that true greatness lies not in worldly achievements but in humble service, especially in chaotic moments. Through examples like parenting a difficult toddler, maintaining demanding friendships, and caring for aging parents, Pastor Ben illustrates how Jesus calls us to embrace these challenging times as opportunities for service. Even in mundane or overwhelming situations, serving others is a way of serving Christ, who sees and values our sacrifices, showing that true greatness in God's kingdom is found in selfless love.

Whenever someone we care about is in the midst of suffering, our initial gut reaction is to desire to comfort them and to stop their pain and suffering. Yet, we can find ourselves in Job’s story when we see how his friends do not provide a comfort to him by relying on simple and easy answers and clichés. Instead, Job shows us the power of presence and encouragement.

This week, we look at the power of words. To illustrate the positive elements, Pastor Brian recounts experiences with relatives, mentors, and friends who spoke uplifting words that boosted his confidence and guided his path, eventually leading him to become a pastor. But he also references the saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me," and how it's not true – our words can cause deep harm.
Citing Proverbs 18:21, we find God speaking creation into being and the tongue having the power of life and death. Pastor Brian also shares how Jesus, referred to as the "Word of Life" in John 1, brings life through his words and how Christians are called to use their words to reflect God's love and truth. We—as Christians—are encouraged to speak differently, uplift others, and reflect our faith through our words. Even though taming our tongues can be difficult, with God’s help, it is possible, and we should strive to speak words that build up others, avoid harmful speech, and embody Christ’s love in their communication.

How comfortable are you hearing the words of others lamenting before you? Does it make you want to immediately comfort them or make them stop feeling sad? Job spends a lot of time lamenting his circumstances and teaches us a few valuable lessons as we follow Jesus.
